Bionorica Arzneimittel GmbH is the most successful manufacturer of phytotherapeutics in Germany. Based on the number of units sold, as well as on prescriptions by physicians, Bionorica's products occupy the top position. With a turnover of 5,6 billion US dollars, Europe is world leader in the sales of herbal remedies. Total worldwide sales stand at 12 billion (IMS, 1997). Germany plays a special role, not only due to its leading position in phytotherapeutics (44 % share of the European market) but also because of its path-breaking scientific demands on products based on herbal raw materials. While, for example, in Asian countries herbal remedies are traditionally important and Eastern Europe is distinguished by a high acceptance of phytotherapeutics, the American market is opening only now but enthusiastically to the phytotherapeutics market. The current export share of Bionorica is about 12%. Bionorica products are sold by subsidiaries (Moscow, Beijing, Bangkok, Budapest), or by contractual partners. Whenever necessary, the head office in Germany supports all kinds of sales and promotional activities. This includes the preparation of application files, support in the development of marketing concepts and even sales representatives' training.
