NZP was formed in the early 1970's, after a consortium of New Zealand meat processing companies decided to extract and purify biochemicals from animal by-products. In 1994 ICI (NZ) Ltd, which had formerly been a minority shareholder, obtained 100% ownership of the company. Initially the company's business was only in bile acids, but today NZP supplies a range of natural biochemicals to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, health food and biotechnology industries. All of the company's products are extracted and purified from natural raw materials. Although the initial focus of the company was the production of biochemicals from meat industry by-products, the current focus is on developing a portfolio of products from plant and marine raw materials. The current product range includes bile acids and salts (steroids), glycosaminoglycans, proteins, protein hydolysates, amino acids, and thymus extracts. Bile acids and their salts have multiple uses which range from digestive aids to intermediates for the production of corticosteroids and gallstone dissolving drugs. Glycosaminoglycans have uses ranging from blood anticoagulants to moisturisers in cosmetics. NZP produces a range of proteins and protein hydrolysates which are used in microbiological media and health foods. NZP's amino acid product taurine is utilised in health food and in infant formulae. The thymus extracts that the company produces have uses ranging from the treatment of immune deficiency diseases to inclusion in cosmetic creams and hair care preparations.
