Phylos is leading the development of advanced protein discovery technologies to rapidly bring novel biopharmaceutical products to market. A key component of the Company’s business model is its PROfile™ chip, a high-throughput addressable array of capture proteins that is poised to revolutionize drug discovery. Phylos is currently building the capabilities, reagents, infrastructure, and partnerships to successfully commercialize the PROfile™ chip. In addition to this, revenues from sales of these protein biochips will position the Company to pursue other innovative applications of its technology platform, including functional proteomics, genomics, and therapeutic opportunities. In April 1998, Phylos entered into a $27 million collaboration with Hoechst Research & Technology GmbH (now Aventis) to develop the Company’s core PROfusion™ technology. In May 1999, Phylos was awarded a $1.6 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) for the development of an automated system for rapid selection of high-affinity binding reagents that can detect biological warfare pathogens. Under this research grant, Phylos is applying its PROfusion™ technology to develop a high-throughput system as a general solution for rapid deployment of biological sensors. In September 1999, Phylos received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for the development of a high-throughput protein chip. Under this two-year grant, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is supporting the Company’s program to build its next-generation PROfile™ chip for drug discovery and functional proteomics. Also in September 1999, Phylos was awarded a Phase II SBIR grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to evaluate its proprietary protein scaffolds for the design of novel anti-cancer agents.
