Organized in 1996 to commercialize technology discovered by esteemed scientists from Stanford University, Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a post-genomics combinatorial biology company revolutionizing drug discovery. At a time when most drug discovery efforts are focused on mapping and sequencing the human genome and associating this information with disease, Rigel has moved far beyond these approaches and has developed technology that enables us to discover novel drug targets that can be regulated by small molecule drugs (formulated as pills that can be taken orally) without first having to know the genes involved. Not only does this significantly accelerate the drug discovery process but more importantly, our technology enables us to select targets for drug development that are specific to relevant diseases and reduce the probability of selecting targets leading to drugs that produce side effects. We have established strategic alliances to enhance product development and commercialization with four corporate partners: Cell Genesys, Janssen Pharmaceutica (a Johnson & Johnson company), Novaritis and Pfizer. These agreements are structured to permit multiple collaborations in each disease area by focusing on disease pathways and targets instead of therapeutic indication or geographical territory, and have generated a potential value of over $200 million. We have a growing patent portfolio, including four patents either issued or allowed and patent applications filed on approximately 60 other inventions, and a growing organization of over 100 talented individuals, roughly one-third of whom hold PhDs, MDs, or other advanced degrees, who continuously contribute to our intellectual property.
